Carlos Cano, MD
Fellow at Moffitt Cancer Center
Tampa, Florida

What is your current role?
I studied pathology in Colombia and am currently completing a fellowship in breast pathology at Moffitt Cancer Center, located in Tampa, Florida.

What is the best part of your occupation?
The best part of my work is being able to make an accurate diagnosis. This enables the clinical and surgical team to provide the appropriate treatment, ultimately contributing to the well-being of my patients.

How did you become interested in pathology?
I became interested in pathology because I am a detail-oriented person. Pathology, and particularly breast pathology, involves many intricate details. Furthermore, working as a pathologist allows me to provide accurate diagnoses for my patients, which are essential for determining the appropriate treatment and prognosis.

How did you become involved with the FSP?
Soon after joining Moffitt Cancer Center, I realized how important it would be for me to become a member of the FSP because of the educational options and the opportunity to get to know other Florida pathologists.

Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP?
Being a member of the FSP supports my education by allowing me to attend and participate in webinars, conferences, and many other educational opportunities. The FSP engages trainees and helps us develop in our career as pathologists.

What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
I would like to see more advancements and integration between pathology and artificial intelligence. I would also like to continue seeing progress in the fields of molecular pathology, informatics, and, of course, breast pathology.

What are your hobbies outside of the office?
In my free time, I enjoy cooking, especially Colombian food, because it reminds me of my roots and culture. I also like going to the gym, watching TV shows, and taking walks.

What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
When I was in high school in Colombia, I participated in an oratory contest and won first place.

Is there anything I did not ask that you would like me to mention for this article?
I am applying this year to the match because I want to become a licensed pathologist in the United States. Also, I want to be at the forefront of the new advancements in this extraordinary specialty.
