Hassan Arekemase, MD
Breast & GYN Pathology Fellow (PGY-5),
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine,
University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine/ Jackson Memorial Hospital
What is your current role?
I am a Breast and Gynecology Fellow at the University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Hospital.
What is the best part of your occupation?
I enjoy the complexity of my cases and the amazing working environment. I am in love with pathology, especially breast and gynecology. If I have to do it all over again, I will still choose pathology.
How did you become interested in pathology?
While in medical school, I was not a fan of clinical medicine. I was always interested in pathophysiology and the pathogenesis of disease. I knew I would be a pathologist; it was just a matter of when and where.
How did you become involved with the FSP?
FSP is a big part of the pathology department here at the University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Hospital. Residents and fellows are always encouraged to participate actively in it.
Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP.
It's an excellent opportunity to network, grow and develop.
What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
I am a huge fan of digital pathology, artificial intelligence, and technology. I cannot wait to see what the future holds. And yes, it will NOT take over our jobs; it will make us more productive and flexible and reduce errors.
What are your hobbies outside of the office?
I am into soccer (football)—I play soccer and am a professional US soccer referee. I enjoy most outdoor activities, music, and actively collecting comic books.
What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I really enjoy pathology. It's a blessing to practice what you enjoy every day.
