Piotr Borkowski, MD
Managing Director of the Center of Excellence for AI Empowered Pathology at AmeriPath/Quest Tampa
Tampa, Florida

What is your current role?
After over 20+ years as a dedicated Pathologist for AmeriPath/Quest in Florida, in 2020 I was honored and thrilled to be tapped to become the Managing and Medical Director. Recently, I was also named the Managing Director of the Center of Excellence for AI Empowered Pathology at AmeriPath/Quest Tampa.

What is the best part of your occupation?
I am passionate about fostering an environment that emphasizes excellent patient care and encourages comradery among pathologists and the lab team for a seamless workflow. I am also keenly focused on the future of Pathology and integrating the newest technologies and techniques in Pathology to enhance and improve diagnosis and workflow

How did you become interested in pathology?
As a child, I strived to be a good student and loved math and science. I also really enjoyed art and abstracts. When in Medical School, I found that the art and practice of medicine really came together in Pathology. When you look at tissue under the microscope what you see are beautiful patterns, and a good pathologist has the talent to recognize what doesn't belong. From my earliest days, I felt that this was my true calling. and continue to enjoy this specialty.

How did you become involved with the FSP?
All pathologists in Florida benefit from gathering at FSP meetings and learning from one another. Seeing the value that FSP brings to the community I decided to be more involved. I have currently a privilege to serve on the board of directors of FSP.

Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP?
FSP presents latest in scientific developments, keeps us abreast of any new legislation, promotes collaboration and communication and so much more.

What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
The field of Pathology is going through a very exciting transformation right now. Digital Pathology and AI are becoming or will soon be part of every Pathologist's daily workflow. I have the privilege of leading the charge of this transformation at Quest Diagnostics in Tampa and wake up excited to go to work each and every day. Scientific advancements integrating AI and Digital Pathology into a Pathologists daily workflow are just beginning. and it's exciting to be a part of this transformation from the beginning and envision where it will lead and be a part of the process.

What are your hobbies outside of the office?
Outside of the office, you can find me at the gym on the elliptical or lifting weights. Working out is a daily habit that I make a top priority. I also enjoy walking and listening to podcasts about history. I still dabble in art and enjoy drawing and painting.

What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
As with most people in Europe, I speak multiple languages. I speak 5 languages and most people are really surprised to learn about that!

Is there anything I did not ask that you would like to mention in this article?
AI and Digital Pathology is going to be transformative in the field of Pathology and medicine in general. It is my goal, that as physicians we remain connected and dedicated to excellent patient care. Even with all the technological advancements we approach each case knowing there is a person, a patient who is relying on us. Medicine must always be changing and advancing, and our patients must always be front of mind.
