Andre Pinto, MD
Gynecologic Pathologist & Residency Program Director
University of Miami
Miami, Florida
What is your current role?
I am a gynecologic pathologist at the University of Miami, where I also function as residency program director.
What is the best part of your occupation?
Looking at challenging and fascinating cases on a daily basis. I also really enjoy the interaction with our residents and fellows as part of our educational mission.
How did you become interested in pathology?
I never thought I was going to become a pathologist. Although I did do some basic research in the pathology lab back in medical school, my initial idea was to train in internal medicine or emergency medicine. Once I started studying for my USMLE boards, pathology was the topic that interested me the most, so I ended up taking the chance and applying. I am so glad that I did.
How did you become involved with the FSP?
Through the influence of some of my colleagues, in special Dr. Carmen Gomez. Years ago, I was invited to present a slide session in one of the annual meetings, and was impressed with the organization, leadership and scientific content. After that, and given my role as residency PD, I became a strong advocate of the society.
Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP?
By networking, participating in meetings with exceptional faculty, recruiting high-caliber fellows for our program, among other benefits. I also get "indirect" benefit when my trainees get the job of their dreams by attending the meetings and connecting with local pathologists.
What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
Our field has evolved so much and so rapidly that is almost impossible to predict what scientific findings we will discover in 10-20 years. But probably the most radical change, from a logistics point of view, will be the ability to diagnose anything using a glass slide and a scanner connected to a remote computer. Perhaps microscopes will be obsolete soon.
What are your hobbies outside of the office?
Working out, eating (a lot), sleeping. Repeat. I am a creature of habit.
What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I have a dog named Tiger. No offense to other pet owners, but he's probably the cutest dog in Miami.
