What is your current role?
Surgical pathology fellow with a focus in gastrointestinal pathology.
What is the best part of your occupation?
Being able to pass on what I have learned so far to the residents while continuing to learn more from some of the pioneers of modern pathology.
How did you become interested in pathology?
The beauty and art of histology is singular in the field of medicine and for someone like me who enjoys a creative aspect in life, it is the best amalgam!
How did you become involved with the FSP?
My program and senior colleagues encouraged me to become a part as they speak highly of the camaraderie and mentorship that the society provides.
Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP?
As a trainee, dipping her toes into an attending role next year, a supporting community to turn to for guidance is something I need now more than ever. And I would love to not only become a part of such a community but hopefully be able to contribute my experiences in the future as well.
What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
Unfortunately, most people both nationally and internationally, do not understand the true depth of what potential pathology as a specialty holds. Trying to create that awareness is something I am passionate about. This will not only open new career avenues for young individuals but also ensure people understand why pathology is so vital to the practice and future of medicine.
What are your hobbies outside of the office?
I enjoy creativity! May it be an art project, a home renovation or landscape photography, I enjoy being able to appreciate and portray the world from a different perspective, my perspective.
What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I can speak seven languages!
Is there anything I did not ask that you would like me to mention for this article?
One of my future plans aside from career advancement and doing a 360 around the world, includes creating a single forum for international medical graduates pursuing pathology, to network and smoothly navigate all the additional challenges that they face, from the nuance's of USMLE, USCE's and how to ensure they are choosing the right program for themselves sitting a million miles away, to how a job search can hold a whole different meaning for an IMG.
