Melissa Duarte, MD
Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellow
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
Miami, Florida
What is your current role?
I am a GI fellow at the University of Miami/Jackson Health system.
What is the best part of your occupation?
I find pathology intriguing because it demands detective-like skills to uncover the root causes of diseases. The intellectual challenge keeps me engaged and ensures that no two cases are ever the same, making the work consistently stimulating and rewarding.
How did you become interested in pathology?
I initially developed a strong interest in pathology during an immunology class in my home country. This fascination deepened when I came to the US for an observership in GI pathology, where I truly fell in love with our profession.
How did you become involved with the FSP?
I first became involved with the FSP through my residency program, which actively encourages resident participation. Attending FSP has been not only a valuable learning experience but also a source of great enjoyment. It's a fantastic opportunity to engage with fellow residents, fellows, and practicing pathologists, creating a vibrant atmosphere that everyone in our department eagerly looks forward to.
Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP.
Being a member of the FSP grants me access to a wealth of resources, including seminars and conferences, which help me stay updated in our field. Networking opportunities are also invaluable, offering a platform to exchange knowledge and receive guidance from experienced pathologists and leaders in my area of interest.
What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
I envision greater interest among medical students in pathology facilitated by digital pathology, which has the potential to revolutionize our teaching methods. Additionally, I aim to foster stronger connections among clinicians, pathologists, and patients to enhance resources that improve understanding of pathology and its pivotal role in healthcare decision-making
What are your hobbies outside of the office?
I treasure spending quality time with my family. Playing tennis and going to the pool are some of my favorite activities to enjoy with my husband and son.
What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I have a talent for storytelling, but my hidden skill is dancing, especially to salsa music, thanks to my mom.
