Yasamin Mirzabeigi, MD
Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Chief Resident- University of Miami
Miami, Florida

What is your current role?
I am a third-year Anatomic and Clinical Pathology resident and the current Chief Resident at the University of Miami. I also serve as one of the FSP Resident Delegates.

What is the best part of your occupation?
The most rewarding part of my job is being able to make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives by putting together the pieces of a puzzle, making diagnoses, and guiding patient care for both clinicians and patients.

How did you become interested in pathology?
For me, pathology was love at first sight. I was first exposed to pathology during medical school, and within just a few days of my rotation, it grew on me so deeply that I couldn’t imagine myself in any other specialty. Choosing pathology was the best decision I’ve
made in my career.

How did you become involved with the FSP?
I first learned about FSP during one of my observerships while applying for residency and attended my first FSP meeting as a medical graduate. FSP helped me build meaningful connections and made me feel welcomed into the field even before I started residency.
Since then, I have attended every FSP meetings.

Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP?
FSP has provided me with many valuable opportunities, from building connections with faculty and trainees from other programs across Florida to meeting medical students interested in pathology. It has also given me the opportunity to serve in a leadership role
as a Resident Delegate.

What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
As someone who found her passion for pathology during medical school, I hope to see increased exposure to pathology for medical students across the United States. Greater awareness and early engagement would allow more students to appreciate how fascinating and essential our field is to patient care.  It has also given me the opportunity to serve in a leadership role as a Resident Delegate

What are your hobbies outside of the office?
Outside of work, I enjoy going to the gym and taking HIIT classes. I also love spending time with my family and enjoying the authentic Persian cuisine my mom cooks. In addition, I enjoy trying different restaurants with my husband, as long as there are options other
than seafood!

What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
A surprising fact about me is that my second dream job, after pathology, is to be a panda caretaker (“panda nanny”).
