We are saddened to hear of the untimely and unexpected passing of FSP member, Mary E. Fowkes, MD, PhD. We remember Dr. Fowkes fondly as an enthusiastic supporter of the FSP, often attending the educational conferences and actively contributing during the FSP Resident Roundtable event each year whereby she shared her insight and experience as a seasoned pathologist and mentor in the pathology community. Dr. Fowkes was a great friend to all and she will be missed.
Dr. Fowkes was born in Clayton, NY and raised in Syracuse, NY, earning her BS degree at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in 1977 and her MD and PhD degrees at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1999. She trained in Boston at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard University and continued her career in New York City where she was board certified in Neuropathology and Forensic Pathology. She then went on to become Professor of Pathology and Director of Neuropathology and Autopsy Services at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Fowkes was the former President of the New York State Society of Pathologists and was currently serving her first term as a Governor of the College of American Pathologists.
