Philip Robinson, MD
Retired Professor of Pathology
Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine
Florida Atlantic University
Boca Raton, FL
What is your current role?
I am a retired pathologist. Prior to that I taught at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, FL and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
What is the best part of your occupation?
I enjoy teaching medical students and residents about pathology as well as looking at surgical pathology cases.
How did you become interested in pathology?
I did an internship in internal medicine in 1975. I found it frustrating, because the internist would talk about the diagnosis, but they could not come up with a diagnosis. In those days, there were autopsy conferences and you could tell that the pathologists knew the answers, but the internists did not. I liked knowing what the patient had. Tissue still remains the gold standard, but now all physicians produce more accurate diagnoses due to the advances in technology.
How did you become involved with the FSP?
I have been a member of the FSP for many years. Most recently, Dr. Mort Levitt asked me if I would be interested in serving as a board member and I agreed.
Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP
The FSP keeps me up to date on the scientific advances in pathology with their excellent educational conferences.
What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
The development of more precise diagnostic tests that would enable clinicians to give more precise and non-toxic therapy.
What are your hobbies outside of the office?
I enjoy reading about history. I recently started playing golf croquet which gets me outside.
