Joy Young-Ramsaran, MD
Laboratory Medical Director - Holy Cross Health
Fort Lauderdale, Florida

What is your current role?
I am the chief of pathology and medical director of the laboratory at Holy Cross Health in Fort Lauderdale. Holy Cross Health is one of ninety-two Catholic hospitals in theTrinity health network and the only Trinity Health Hospital in Florida.

What is the best part of your occupation?
Each day there are new cases with new diagnoses to be made.  I enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to supply vital information that will guide proper treatment and care for patients.

How did you become interested in pathology?
As a teenager I read a book that featured a female Pathologist that helped solve a murder mystery through clues she gleaned from an autopsy. I thought she was interesting and it sparked my interest in Pathology as a career where your work solves mysteries.

How did you become involved with the FSP?
I have attended several FSP annual meetings. The experts and topics were well suited and practical for continued learning and career development.

Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP?
I find the educational content and the information on Florida specific legislation important to staying up to date. The networking opportunities with other Pathologists and Pathology vendors is also worthwhile to me.

What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?
I think that Pathologists need to be involved in tailoring the advancements in artificial intelligence to aid in precision of diagnoses while maintaining the art of reading the histologic slides.

What are your hobbies outside of the office?
Zumba dancing, playing Mahjongg, and reading books on tape.

What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I love to plan family trips and have been inside Egyptian pyramids, on safari and to the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, and walked on the Great Wall of China, which are all experiences I dreamed of having since learning of them in childhood.

Is there anything I did not ask that you would like mentioned in the article?
I have worked as a general surgical pathologist for the last 33 years, 30 of them at Holy Cross Hospital.
