FSP Member Spotlight

Welcome to this edition of the FSP member spotlight. This month we are excited to feature Merce Jorda, MD, PhD, MBA. We are proud to congratulate Dr. Jorda on her recent appointment as Chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Miami! Dr. Jorda has been a  long-time member of the FSP and has served as an invited speaker at the FSP educational conferences frequently and also represents her program on the FSP’s academic chairs workgroup within the FSP.

What is your current role?
Chair of Department of Pathology at the University of Miami.

What is the best part of your occupation?
Having the ability to fix complex problems. 

How did you become interested in pathology?
At medical school, I realized that Pathologists are the ones giving the diagnosis and providing the final directive for patient management.

How did you become involved with the FSP?
As a member of the Department of Pathology at UM and participating in the Summer and Annual Conferences.

Explain how you benefit from being a member of FSP.
Many ways; networking, learning and teaching.

What would you like to see occur in the field of pathology (i.e., scientific advances, greater awareness of the field, etc.) during your career?  
Changes such as a move to complete digital pathology transition and have paid direct patient's appointments. I believe laboratory medicine should be integrated into the health system, playing an active role in population medicine by risk-stratifying, identifying and closing care gaps, identifying high-risk patients, and guiding targeted intervention for disease management.

What are your hobbies outside of the office?
Singing, cooking and traveling.

What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I used to be a professional singer in Catalonia, Spain.

Is there anything I did not ask that you would like me to mention in the article? 
Pathology and Laboratory medicine needs to move fast to be integrated in the Health systems and provide the value that is so much needed in Healthcare!
